A CRT monitor within the premises of Desktopowers' office had broken down this afternoon.
A smell similar to burnt food was detected by witnesses, followed by the sight of quick-rising column of grey smoke.
The owner, DS, was not at her workstation when the incident took place. When notified of the situation, she immediately removed the soft toy bear sitting on the monitor and proceeded to shut it down, with the help of a colleague, AT.
A distressed DS said, “I was shocked to see that my monitor was giving out so much smoke. I thought the burning was caused by the soft toy’s fur falling into the monitor. My files in the CPU will still be there right?”
One of the witnesses, AK, said the whole episode happened too quickly, some of them did not know what to do.
AK was busy with her work approximately two metres away from DS’ workstation when the event occurred.
“Initially I thought the smell resembles that of fresh popcorn. It was only when I heard someone mention about the smoke did I realize it was actually the monitor,” reported another witness, ML.
With the retirement of her CRT monitor, DS had hoped she would receive a flat-screen LCD monitor as replacement.
The manager, KT, came over to help when he saw the rising smoke. Instant action was taken to remove the spoilt monitor. It was replaced with a similar monitor for DS to continue with her work.
No investigation on the cause of burning will be carried out.
