sTuCk iN tHe LiFt *gasp*

CH, MOA and YM were stuck in Lift 16U after lunch this afternoon.. we were stuck in there, at level 31, for 30 bloody minutes! (from 230pm to 3pm) slight breathing difficulties started about 10 minutes after the lift stopped operating.. getting worse at time ticks away...

we tried 'intercom-ing' 'someone out there' to get us out, but replies we received were only "we're getting the technician now, please hang on for a while" or "just a minute more, the technician is resetting the lift system" or "technician is on his way (another lady in the lift exclaimed "What?! still on his way?" hearing this comment) just a minute more.." or "about 5 to 10minutes wait, sorry ar, we're getting someone to rescue you out"

well, we did get out eventually, not very happy with the event.. hmmm, mayb we can buy 4D or toto lar, with the numbers... *ponders*

Cheers,
Chuanhui

Desktopower Newsletter #1 <2008 DTP R&R Executive Committee>

Dear Desktopowers,

Welcome to the 1st and maybe the ONLY issue of DTP R&R Executive Committee Newsletter. =P

Earlier this year, the 2007 DTP R&R Executive Committee held an annual meeting, to reflect and discuss on various matters concerning Desktopower’s well-being. The impending need for recruitment has been neglected until now. In this issue of the Desktopower Newsletter, we are very glad to inform you that we have a few new members in the DTP R&R Executive Committee. In addition to these new members, we also have some changes in the designation of existing members.

Note: All candidates are carefully handpicked and approved by Esther, our head-nodding President.

New members

Deslyn - Creative Director
Some background on Deslyn: Although she is far away in DP, she still misses us (How do we know? Check out the frequent lunch breaks, tea breaks, toilet breaks etc she has with us!). Well equipped with a dunno-how-many-times-zoom semi-pro Olympus camera and highly regarded for her efficiency and skills in creating videos, she is just the right person to be our Creative director. Molly will step down to assist her as the Assistant Creative director.

XiaoLei – Programme Manager
Some background on XiaoLei: An individual with lots of creative ideas (gift wrapping, on-leave table pranks) and skills (bbq-ing food, cutting the huge watermelon at chalet), she’s one not to be missed as part of the programme team! Definitely a budding organizer for DTP’s activities, we will be looking forward to a fun-filled 2008!

MeiXin – Programme Manager
Some background on MeiXin: She has made an impression with her famous quote; “When you take a photo, saying the word ‘sex’ gives a natural smile”. A spontaneous lady who enjoys playing pool and bowling, wears shades to lunches, we are sure she has much up her sleeves, waiting for opportunities to showcase her ideas. Well, now she’s got the golden opportunity!

MinMin – Programme Manager
Some background on MinMin: Hailing all the way from Larkin, JB, Malaysia, she is definitely the best person to look for, if you need directions to JB. Our lobang queen cum translator in Malaysia, should DTP decide to take a weekend break in Malaysia. Armed with her hippy "Your phone is ringing, Your phone is rrringing, Your phone is rrrrrrrringing" ringtone, help is only a phonecall away should you need help in Malaysia. (update: she is crowned dancing queen of DTP after that crazy night @ 'Las Vegas')

Molly – Public Relations Officer
Some background on Molly: Well versed in many languages (english, thai, japanese, korean, mandarin), a linguist in the department. Also known for her playful and out-going nature, she is the most-deserving person to take over as our official Emcee, after siao-ding-dong Disi left the company. *LOL

New designation

Molly – Assistant Creative Director
Although she has been an outstanding Creative Director, she has even more than amply displayed her potential as a Public Relations Officer. Moreover, our dear Deslyn who recently invested in a semi-pro camera seems ready to take on the role.

YingChyi – External Relations Officer
According to LobbyMan 2007/ Chairman 2008, YingChyi failed to exercise the role of and External Relations Manger beyond the field of Desktopowers Alumni. She has rejected work delegated to her in 2007, much to LobbyMan 2007/ Chairman 2008 disappointment. We hope the new designation will be a source of motivation for her this year! All the best, YingChyi!

Yong Min – From Chairman to StoolMan to FloorMan to LobbyMan and self-appointed Chairman(again) this year.
Look at the number of times Yong Min changed titles in 2007. Now we know how many mistakes he had made eh? Simply because the rank cannot go any lower, we shall allow him to be Chairman(again) in 2008. Last chance for you!

****************************

With that, we shall now present to you… the 2008 DTP R&R Executive Committee (until further notice) with immediate effect:

President - Esther
-Listen and nods head in agreement.
-To be cc-ed when her head-nodding approval is required.

Chairman – Yong Min
-Gets demoted when mistakes are made, delegates jobs when necessary, involves in all discussions.
-To be cc-ed in ALL committee related emails.

Senior Advisor (Crappy King) - Alan
-Crap, source of 欠扁问答题s (aka lame jokes)
-To be cc-ed when advice (more like crap and lame jokes) are required.

Secretary/ Treasurer – Chuanhui
-Take on assignments delegated by Chiarman, admin and finance matters
-To be cc-ed in ALL committee related emails.

Publications Director - Chuanhui
-Maintain and update DTP website (or delegate the job to Assistant)

'Overworked' Monitor Retires in Rising Smoke

(this is the best effect i can do w ms.ppt)

A CRT monitor within the premises of Desktopowers' office had broken down this afternoon.

A smell similar to burnt food was detected by witnesses, followed by the sight of quick-rising column of grey smoke.

The owner, DS, was not at her workstation when the incident took place. When notified of the situation, she immediately removed the soft toy bear sitting on the monitor and proceeded to shut it down, with the help of a colleague, AT.

A distressed DS said, “I was shocked to see that my monitor was giving out so much smoke. I thought the burning was caused by the soft toy’s fur falling into the monitor. My files in the CPU will still be there right?”

One of the witnesses, AK, said the whole episode happened too quickly, some of them did not know what to do.

AK was busy with her work approximately two metres away from DS’ workstation when the event occurred.

“Initially I thought the smell resembles that of fresh popcorn. It was only when I heard someone mention about the smoke did I realize it was actually the monitor,” reported another witness, ML.

With the retirement of her CRT monitor, DS had hoped she would receive a flat-screen LCD monitor as replacement.

***

The manager, KT, came over to help when he saw the rising smoke. Instant action was taken to remove the spoilt monitor. It was replaced with a similar monitor for DS to continue with her work.

No investigation on the cause of burning will be carried out.

Feeling Good by Eugene Loh

Now we all know at least person who seems to have it all - good looking, well-to-do, great job, nice apartment, with a car and so on - but strangely, they're not happy. And you know they're not happy because they're mostly grumpy, complain about almost anything, and are inclined to be mean to people. Why?
Well, things don't make one happy. Neither do appearances. The keys to feeling good and lasting joy are intangible.
We can all start feeling good by regularly engaging in something as simple as appreciating the moment. I know that there are experiences that just cannot be enjoyable in any way, but most of the time, we don't take the time to cherish what we have around us. We're always queueing, waiting to be served, waiting to get somewhere, waiting to get something, delaying joy until that goal has been achieved. As a result, we spend a lot of time feeling impatient and just "spacing out". So learn to appreciate whatever you can at the moment - whether it's something beautiful, something that sparks an idea, thinking of what you can do for your loved one, nature, imbibing a piece of information and so on.
Also, give yourself a higher calling. Indulging yourself produces temporary happiness. Helping others creates lasting joy. Life is short, so make a difference in someone's life. And it need not just be charity. You can help others by using your expertise and knowledge to guide others towards making better decisions. For example, if you're a sales executive, in cases where you genuinely feel that the customers will not benefit from a certain product, tell them. Being ambitious doesn't mean you have to be heartless.
Feeling good also requires you to immerse yourself in moments when you're so engrossed in something, the rest of the world disappears. It could be when you're reading a gripping novel, writing a piece of music, or playing basketball. These moments when you're giving your all, and you're also receiving a lot, are crucial to feeling good.
Believe you have choices. Don't believe in dead-ends. What helps greatly in this is cultivating relationships, having hobbies, taking up new skills, absorbing new knowledge. Build dynamic communities both within yourself and in your external sphere. So when problems arise, it won't seem as if the world is ending.
