Today is the first day of the Hungry Ghost Festival!!!
The Hungry Ghosts Festival or the Feast for the Wandering Souls (also known as Zhong Yuan Jie) is held on the 7th month of the lunar calendar. The Chinese believe that during this month, the gates of hell are opened and all spirits are free to roam the earth and visit their living relatives for a month. Of course, there are also lost and wandering spirits that may bump into people! If you have read books by Russell Lee, come on, it's time to be afraid!! If not, ask someone to scare you till you shit in your pants!
Somebody please tell Mr Netherlands that we DO NOT want to OT during this month!!
During the Hungry Ghosts Festival, ‘hell money’, paper offerings and joss sticks are burnt to see to the material needs of the deceased. Food is offered so that the souls do not go hungry and wreak havoc on earth. Neighbourhood celebration dinners and the popularly known ge tai or ‘song-stage” are usually held on this day. The auction of goods, Chinese operas and song performances form part of the festivities.
As ghosts are believed to dominate events, no auspicious activities such as weddings and business launches are held during this period.
Yeah Yeah! No OT this 7th month!!!
